We Used to Trust Our Gut on LTE. Now We Have the Data.

When we install an LTE SIM at a client site, we have always been able to tell you whether it is working. What we have not always been able to tell you is how well it is working, and why.A SIM that is technically online but operating with poor signal quality is not the same as a SIM that is genuinely reliable. The first one will serve you most of the time and fail you when you need it most. The second one will be there. Until recently, the only way to know which one you had was to be on site, holding a device, running a manual check. Or to wait for a client to call.We decided that was not good enough.

Why gut feel is not a managed LTE connectivity monitoring strategy

LTE connectivity has grown significantly as part of our managed connectivity offering to client sites. It serves as backup connectivity when primary fibre links go down, primary connectivity for remote or temporary locations, and increasingly as a standalone solution for sites where fibre installation is impractical or delayed. As the number of LTE SIMs we manage has grown, so has the complexity of managing them well.

The challenge is that LTE performance is environmental. Signal quality depends on the device’s physical location, nearby interference, the load on the carrier’s local infrastructure, and atmospheric conditions that can change day to day. A SIM that performed well at installation may not perform equally well six months later. A site that had good signal in one corner of a building may have significantly weaker signal in another. These are not problems you can detect from a dashboard that simply shows you whether the connection is up or down.

What you need is actual data: signal-to-noise ratio, received signal strength, connection quality over time. The kind of information that tells you not just that the SIM is online, but whether it is operating at a level you would be comfortable relying on when the primary link fails.

Without that data, decisions about LTE deployments have a component of educated guesswork built into them. Engineers develop a feel for what a good installation looks like, and that feel is genuinely useful. But feel is not a monitoring strategy.

What real-time LTE telemetry looks like in practice

We have now deployed a piece of software called Genie ACS that changes how we interact with the ZTE devices we use in LTE installations. The ZTE devices support a protocol called TR-069, which establishes a persistent connection between the device and a management server. At regular intervals, the device reports back to our environment with its current operating statistics: signal-to-noise ratio, received signal strength indicator, and a range of additional metrics that reflect the real-world quality of the LTE connection at that moment.

This data now flows into our monitoring environment continuously. We can see, at any point, how every managed LTE device is actually performing — not just whether it is online. We can observe trends over time, identify devices where signal quality is degrading before that degradation causes a client problem, and make decisions about remediation based on evidence rather than a site visit.

The immediate goal is to integrate this telemetry into our TRC dashboard, giving our Trusted Response Centreâ„¢ a real-time view of LTE connection quality across the estate. When a client calls to say their backup link is slow, the answer will not require an investigation to begin from scratch. The data will already be there.

How LTE signal data changes troubleshooting, installation, and capacity planning

The practical impact shows up in a few specific scenarios.

The first is troubleshooting. When an LTE connection is underperforming, the question is always whether the problem is the device, the installation location, the carrier’s network, or something else entirely. With historical signal quality data available, the engineer handling the call can immediately see whether this is a new problem or a long-standing one, whether it correlates with a particular time of day, and whether the signal metrics point toward a physical relocation or a carrier-side investigation.

The second is installation quality assurance. When a new LTE SIM goes live, we now have a baseline. If signal quality was strong at deployment and has since degraded, that is meaningful. If it was marginal at deployment, that is also meaningful — and it is information we can act on before the client’s primary link fails and the backup becomes critical.

The third is capacity planning. LTE SIM management is becoming a material part of our connectivity practice. Having real data on how those connections are performing gives us a much clearer picture of which sites are well-served and which ones warrant a review, before the review is triggered by an incident.

Managed connectivity intelligence: matching LTE to the visibility standard of fibre

Managed connectivity is not just about provisioning links and monitoring uptime. It is about understanding the quality of those links in enough detail to be confident they will perform when they matter. For fibre and leased line connections, that kind of telemetry has been available for years. For LTE, the tooling has lagged behind — partly because LTE was treated as a secondary option, and secondary options did not always get the same level of investment.

That thinking has not kept pace with how LTE is actually being used. As more businesses rely on mobile connectivity for critical functions, the expectation of visibility and reliability needs to match. What we have built with Genie ACS is a step toward managing LTE the same way we manage everything else in a client’s environment: with real data, continuous visibility, and the ability to get ahead of problems before they become incidents.

The gut feel was useful while it was all we had. It is not all we have anymore.
