We Used to Trust Our Gut on LTE. Now We Have the Data.

When we install an LTE SIM at a client site, we have always been able to tell you whether it is working. What we have not always been able to tell you is how well it is working, and whether it will perform reliably when the client really needs it.

A SIM that is online but operating with poor signal quality is not the same as a connection that can be depended on. The first may work most of the time and fail when the primary link goes down. The second is ready to do the job it was installed for.

Until recently, assessing that difference often required an engineer to be on site, test the device manually and use experience to judge the quality of the installation.

That experience is valuable. But gut feel is not a monitoring strategy.

Being Online Is Not the Same as Being Reliable

LTE has become an increasingly important part of our managed connectivity offering.

It is used as backup connectivity when primary fibre links fail, as the main connection for remote or temporary locations, and as an alternative for sites where fibre installation is impractical or delayed.  As the number of LTE connections we manage has grown, so has the need for better visibility.

LTE performance is affected by factors such as device placement, building materials, interference, local tower congestion and changing carrier-network conditions. A connection that performed well when it was installed may not deliver the same quality six months later.

A basic monitoring dashboard may show that the connection is online. It does not necessarily tell you whether the signal is strong, stable and reliable enough to carry the site when the primary link fails.

For that, you need more than an up-or-down status.  You need the underlying signal data.

Bringing LTE Signal Data Into Our Monitoring Environment

We have now implemented GenieACS to change how we monitor and manage the ZTE devices used in our LTE installations.

Using the TR-069 device-management protocol, the devices report operational information back to our environment at regular intervals. This gives us access to signal-quality measurements and other performance data that reflect how each LTE connection is operating in the real world.

That data now feeds into our monitoring environment.

Instead of seeing only whether a device is online, we can observe the quality of the connection over time. We can identify declining signal performance, compare current readings with previous baselines and investigate potential problems before they develop into client-facing incidents.

The next step is to bring this telemetry into the Trusted Response Centreâ„¢ dashboard, giving the team a live view of LTE performance across the environments we manage.

When a client reports that a backup link is slow or unstable, the investigation will no longer need to begin from scratch. The historical data will already be available.

How Better LTE Visibility Changes the Service

The practical value becomes clear in three areas.

Faster Troubleshooting

When an LTE connection underperforms, several possible causes need to be considered.  The problem could be related to the device, its physical position, the installation environment, the carrier network or congestion at a particular time.

With historical signal data, an engineer can immediately see whether the degradation is new or long-standing, whether it follows a pattern and whether the readings point towards a physical installation issue or a carrier-side investigation.

That creates a much better starting point than simply knowing that the connection is online.

Better Installation Quality

Every new installation can now establish a performance baseline.  If the connection is strong when it is installed and deteriorates later, we can see that change. If the signal is marginal from the beginning, we can identify the risk and address it before the connection is needed during an outage.

This is particularly important for backup links. A backup connection should not be tested for the first time when the primary link has already failed.

More Proactive Management

As LTE becomes a larger part of managed connectivity, we need to understand which sites are performing well and which may require attention.  Continuous signal data helps us identify sites where devices may need to be repositioned, equipment may need to be reviewed or carrier performance may warrant further investigation.

Instead of waiting for a user to report a poor connection, the team can use the data to determine where intervention is needed.

Managed connectivity intelligence: giving LTE the same attention as primary connectivity

Managed connectivity is not simply about provisioning a link and confirming that it is online.  It is about understanding whether that connection will perform when the business depends on it. Detailed performance telemetry has long been expected for fibre and leased-line connectivity. LTE was often treated as a secondary service and did not always receive the same level of visibility.

That no longer reflects the role LTE plays in modern business environments.  For some sites, it is the primary connection. For others, it is the link expected to keep the business operating when the primary service fails. In both cases, it deserves more than a green status indicator on a dashboard.

What we have implemented is a step towards managing LTE in the same way we manage the rest of a client’s connectivity environment: with continuous visibility, historical context and evidence-based decisions.

The gut feel was useful while it was all we had. It is not all we have anymore.
